Is an Epoxy Garage Floor in San Diego a Good Investment for a Family Home?
June 5, 2025Why You Should Replace Baseboards and How Professionals Can Help – A San Diego Homeowner’s Guide
June 23, 2025Which lasts longer: Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams? There is no defensible single lifespan for either brand. Compare the actual coating, the surface beneath it, preparation, application, exposure, and care. Assigning 10–12 years to one paint line and 8–10 to another without comparable evidence creates a precision the job itself cannot support.
When reviewing estimates for your home, start by asking what each painter means by “a durable finish.” It may mean walls that tolerate cleaning, an exterior system suited to the substrate, or a cabinet finish that withstands handling. Those are related concerns, but they are not the same specification.
What makes a paint job last?
Justin’s estimating approach begins with the work before the finish coat. On an exterior, that means identifying washing, loose-paint removal, sanding, appropriate priming, repairs, and the areas included or excluded. A premium brand name does not tell you whether those steps are in the price.
For San Diego exteriors, his usual specified products include Sherwin-Williams Duration or Dunn-Edwards EverShield, with the product and sheen assigned to the relevant surface. His confirmed exterior standard is two separate finish coats. That describes J Brown’s scope; it is not a lifespan test against Benjamin Moore.
The right question is not just “Which paint lasts longer?” It is “What will help this coating stay attached and perform on my house?” A sound surface, a suitable coating system, and the agreed application matter together. See our exterior painting process for the preparation side of that decision.
Interior walls: compare Regal Select and Emerald by the job
Benjamin Moore Regal Select Interior and Sherwin-Williams Emerald Interior are examples of wall coatings to research. Select the exact sheen and base before comparing specifications. Do not compare an interior formula from one brand with an exterior formula from the other.
The Regal Select Interior Matte N548 data sheet recommends two coats for full color development and optimum performance, with different allowances for bare and previously painted surfaces. Emerald Interior Matte K36’s data sheet specifies preparation and coating systems by substrate. Neither document is a head-to-head longevity test.
For a busy room, ask about cleaning expectations and finish appearance. For a recently patched wall, ask how the repaired areas will be prepared. For a strong color change, discuss the primer and finish coats rather than assuming a premium paint will hide everything in one pass.
Our interior painting service sets out the surfaces and preparation to consider alongside those product choices.
AURA vs. Emerald, or Regal Select vs. Duration Home?
If you are comparing AURA with Emerald for interior walls, specify AURA Interior and Emerald Interior. If the bids name Regal Select and Duration, use Regal Select Interior and Duration Home Interior. Duration Exterior and Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel are different products; their specifications do not substitute for these wall paints.
Benjamin Moore highlights AURA’s color retention and repeated cleaning. Sherwin-Williams highlights Emerald Interior’s washability and Duration Home’s stain resistance. Start with the room’s use and the appearance you want, then review each exact product’s instructions. Compare the selected sheens and current written prices. Those manufacturer features support a product discussion, not a controlled lifespan comparison or a promise of a fixed repaint interval.
Exterior durability: surface condition comes first
Outside, a wall with sound existing paint is a different project from exposed wood, chalking stucco, or a coating that is coming loose. The estimate needs to address the condition actually found, not apply a brand-wide promise to every elevation.
Justin describes thorough washing and drying before stucco painting, repair of deteriorated areas, and appropriate masonry priming. Heavy texture may be sprayed and back-rolled while wet; smooth finishes need a different approach to avoid unwanted roller texture. Two spray directions during one application are not two separate finish coats.
Those process details are more actionable than saying one manufacturer always wins outdoors. For each proposed exterior product, check substrate suitability, primer requirements, application conditions, and the current data sheet. Do not transfer an interior product’s claims to an exterior product with a similar name.
If damaged stucco is part of the project, distinguish localized stucco repair from painting. A new topcoat is not a repair to an unresolved moisture problem.
Washability, touch-ups, and lifespan are different questions
A coating may be suitable for routine cleaning without making every future touch-up invisible. Before choosing, discuss how the surface will be used and maintained. Follow the selected product’s cleaning instructions after painting rather than scrubbing a finish as soon as it feels dry.
For touch-ups, keep the product name, color formula, sheen, and application details. An older painted surface may not look identical to fresh paint; confirm the appearance in a small area before assuming a spot repair will disappear.
Do not treat a product warranty as a repaint interval. Ask the contractor to explain the product instructions and the written terms that apply to the job. This guide does not rate either company’s claim handling or publish a J Brown workmanship warranty.
How long should you wait between coats?
Use the selected product’s recoat instruction, not a single timetable for both brands. Dry-to-touch, ready-to-recoat, and ready-to-clean describe different stages. Temperature, humidity, and film thickness can affect the schedule.
For example, the Regal Select Matte N548 sheet lists a 1–2-hour recoat time at 77°F and 50% relative humidity; Emerald Interior Matte K36 lists four hours at those stated conditions. These are product-specific examples, not full-cure times or promises for every room and paint line. Read the current label for the product being applied.
Our paint drying and curing guide explains how to plan the different milestones without rushing the finish.
Price and long-term value: compare like-for-like estimates
Compare current prices for the specified products and quantities, then compare the whole job. If one proposal includes repairs, protection, primer, and two finish coats while another only says “paint walls,” a brand comparison will not explain the price gap.
Justin’s materials chart identifies the surface, manufacturer, product, sheen, color, and coats. His pricing separates agreed work so the homeowner can understand the options and exclusions. That gives you something more useful to evaluate than an unsupported return-on-investment calculation based on a predicted number of years.

Benjamin Moore vs. Sherwin-Williams: frequently asked questions
Which brand lasts longer?
Neither brand has one lifespan that applies to every product and home. Compare the exact coating, preparation, existing surface, exposure, application, and care. J Brown’s preference for Sherwin-Williams and Dunn-Edwards is not a controlled comparison with Benjamin Moore.
Can I apply Benjamin Moore over Sherwin-Williams, or the reverse?
Check the existing coating’s condition and compatibility with the new system. Follow the selected product’s cleaning, surface preparation, and primer instructions. A different brand name alone does not determine whether repainting will work.
Do both brands have the same recoat time?
No. Recoat time belongs to the particular product and stated conditions, not the whole brand. Use its current label or technical data sheet, and do not confuse a recoat interval with full curing or readiness for cleaning.
Is the best interior paint also the best exterior paint?
Not necessarily. Select a product intended for the surface and exposure. An interior wall coating and an exterior coating with a similar name can have different application requirements; compare the actual formulas for the actual job.
Can I use the same wall paint on kitchen cabinets?
Do not assume so. Cabinets need preparation and a finish suited to that surface and use. Specify the cabinet coating system separately rather than choosing it solely because you liked a brand’s wall paint.
