Why pre-painting wood repair is important

Find out how problems with your home’s wooden fixtures could affect your exterior painting project.

Damaged wood can ruin a good paint job

Exterior painting can breathe new life into your home, and it’s one of the most cost-effective ways to give a home a whole new look.

Before getting started on your home’s new exterior paint job, you will need to make a few preparations if you want things to go as smoothly as possible. One thing you need to be wary of is the condition of your home’s wood surfaces.

You may think that a coat of paint can cover up any wood damage, but it’ll make the damage more noticeable and ruin your home’s new exterior paint job. This is why pre-painting wood repair is important.

Types of wood damage you need to fix

These are some common types of wood damage you’ll see on a home’s wood surfaces:

rotting-wood
Wood rot

The most common cause of wood rot is water seeping into the wood and causing it to start decaying. If the damage done by the rot is too extensive, you’ll need to replace the affected part of the wood completely before painting.

termite-infestation
Termite damage

These small creatures can wreak havoc on wooden structures. Sometimes, termites eat away under the surface of the wood and you won’t even know the wood is damaged until you try to paint it.

Holes in wood
Holes in the wood

This kind of damage is usually caused by wood worms burrowing through the wood. Painting over these holes won’t hide them; instead, you should try filling the holes in with wood filler before painting.

Split wood

During the dry season, wooden planks in your home’s sidings could lose moisture; this causes them to shrink and spaces start to appear on the surface. Painting over split wood will only make the damage more obvious.

What our clients say about us

Painting Ratings

My wife and I just had Justin, owner J. Brown Painting (619.356.0830) complete a project for us that included both interior and exterior painting, as well as miscellaneous touch-up areas. The job was completed in less time that he predicted; Justin’s work was outstanding; he was extremely neat and conscientious; and was a pleasure to deal with. We highly recommend him! His pricing was also quite reasonable.

Painting Ratings

I’m a fellow contractor and I met Justin at a jobsite for a personal friend of mine. I was impressed with his communication and people skills. He treated his employees with respect as well. I asked my friend how he liked Justin’s service after Justin was done and my friend had all good things to say. I’m glad to have a painter I can call on.

FAQ

How can I remove termites?

Mix sodium borate with water and spray the mixture onto the termite-affected areas of the woodwork. The termites should die out after about three days to a week. But you may need the assistance from a specialist to fix the damages.

Can I make wood filler by myself?

Yes, you can. The easiest way to do this is by mixing some sawdust with wood glue.

How can I make my woodwork waterproof?

Make a mixture of one part linseed oil, one part turpentine, and half part apple cider vinegar. Then sandpaper the wood, dust it off and apply the mixture to the wood using a cloth.
